Wednesday, April 06, 2005 My Dramatic Story It was Tuesday, March 29, 2005. My two sisters and brother decided to ride some of my grandpa's horses. I was doing something for Biology, but had just finished. So, I decided to join them. My younger siblings often ride at my grandpa's, but I hadn’t ridden for quite a while. Maria told me which horse I was to ride - Smokey, now white, but named for his once smoky color. I brushed him, and then Maria put on the saddle. Finally, I was ready to ride. Since I wasn't used to riding, Maria took the lead rope attached to Smokey's bridle and led me out to the pasture. I was a little uneasy about riding, and I asked Maria if she thought I might fall off. She assured me that I probably wouldn't, but if I did, I wouldn’t get hurt. She explained that she had fallen off several times without injury. So, I trusted her and we went on. We went out into the more open pasture. Smokey had been obedient the entire time. But suddenly, within a split second, Smokey jerked to the right. Maria yelled, "No, Smokey!" But it was too late. She was forced to let go of the lead rope. About three seconds went by, it was all a blur. As the saddle started to slip to the right side, I continued with it. I knew I was going to fall off. THUD! I hit the ground, head first. My shoulder and side scraped the earth. I cried out, disoriented for a moment. I could hear my sister yelling at the horse. My head was throbbing and my scraped shoulder and side began to slightly ache. Maria asked if I wanted to get back on. I replied that I didn't and that I was going to walk back to the car where our mom was taking a nap. Walking back seemed to take a long time with my aching head. When I was about halfway to the barn, I heard Maria screaming at Smokey, "No, Smokey! NO!" I turned just as she fell off and did a sort of summersault on the ground. I remember thinking, 'that had to hurt.' I finally got back to the car. My mom had the seat back and was peacefully sleeping. I got in the passenger side and closed the door. My mom looked up and said, "You’re done riding?" I started crying, I couldn't help it. "Mommy, I fell off the horse..." She looked at my scraped shoulder. "Ooh, what else hurts?" I told her my head was aching badly. There was an old Dairy Queen cup of water in the car cup-holder. She gave me some ibuprofen and I drank the water. She then tried to wash some of the dirt off of my shirt. "I want to go home," I whimpered. "And Maria fell off, too..." My mom got out of the car. "I’ll go tell them to put up the horses and we’ll go home." As she was talking to my siblings, I suddenly felt nauseous. I sat up, opened the car door, and bent over, holding my head. The first thought that came to my mind was, 'I might have a concussion...' When we finally started home, I was trying to sleep and shut everything out. My head was KIL'LING me! The nausea came back. "I think I’m going to throw up!" My sister took the DQ cup, dumped out the water, and quickly gave it to me. As I was puking up everything I ate that day, my mom said, "If she throws up again, we might have to take her to the hospital. She could have a concussion..." We got home. I threw away the nearly full cup and went inside. I laid on my bed for all of one minute before I felt sick again. I want into the bathroom and leaned over the toilet. After a minute or two, I laid on the cold, hard floor. For some reason, it was comforting. I threw up again. I told my mom and she called Mrs. Ray. Mrs. Ray said it would probably be best to take me to the emergency room. After my mom hung up, she told Allen to check and see if my pupils were different shaped. Apparently that's one of the signs for a concussion. He checked them and sure enough, one was bigger than the other. "Charity," My mom said, "We need to take you to the hospital." "I don’t want to go." I was crying again, miserable. "I know, honey, but you have to. You might have a concussion and it could be serious." So, of course, we left for the hospital. TO BE CONTINUED...
